THE INCREASE OF VIOLENCE IN CHILEAN SOCIETY AND IT'S CAUSES
1. Violence on television?
Violence is everywhere in our society and keep increasing. Violence is due to several factors like social classes, socio-economics status, and a diversity in population especially in religion, politics or cultural. The most astonish, is teen violence which keep increasing. Also teen delinquency has increased.
Some people claim that the main cause of this issue is the amount of aggressive behaviour that tv programs have nowadays. But is this true? In my opinion, it's reasonable to blame the content we watch for entertainment, and if teens don't have good parenting that can control what their child sees on internet or tv then it's no surprise to see daily news of minors committing crimes and robberies like if they were playing a game.
2. What about Chilean Education?
Education is a key factor to be considered if we want a more peaceful and intelligent citizenship. But in Chile we have many issues in our educational system that haven't been touched by politicians, as a result of this we see a huge gap between school's quality that depends on the amount of money parents pay for them. Some of the problems we've got are:
- There is no policy that guarantees the professionalism of teachers. This problem has several edges: a) Low social assessment of the profession; b) Low remuneration; c) School organization makes reflection and professional development difficult; d) Absence of incentives for permanence and permanent professional development.
- The current school organization does not facilitate the effective functioning of schools and high schools in poverty.
- The purchasing power of student's families acts as a determinant of their school career and their results. It is necessary to create mechanisms that break social determinism and guarantee the development of all citizens.
3. And Immigration?
The Center for Public Studies (CEP) presented a recent book on the reality of immigrants in Chile, a document that probably gives the most complete look that has been prepared to date in relation to this issue. The work takes on special relevance because the INE has announced that the population of foreigners living in Chile already represents 6% of the total population, realizing a dynamic phenomenon that forces the country to rethink its public policies.
One of the most valuable elements of this multidimensional view is that it allows to appreciate the great virtues that immigration has, as well as its complexities, confirming that it is necessary to have a new immigration policy that allows to collect these positive influences, and regulate those matters that They can potentially be more problematic. From the data provided by the study it is observed that in sensitive areas such as health, education and housing, preferential attention is required, because it is there where the greatest difficulties are usually verified, confirming that promoting deregulated immigration is not responsible and can feed the perception refusal towards foreigners, an aspect that although it has improved according to the study, still more than half of the population believes that more drastic measures should be taken against those illegal.
If our politicians don't dedicate their time on solving illegal immigration issues, then they are leaving an open door to violent cultures from other countries, new types of delinquency, and a huge increase of poverty. So we can say that the increase of violence could come from immigrants but that's not enough explanation.
4. Is legalizing marijuana and other drugs a good idea?
Recent studies show high rates of early consumption and cannabis addiction in Chilean adolescents. Faced with this situation, experts debate whether it is better to face the problem with the current ban or innovate in strategies, as Canada has just done.
According to me, trying legalizing marijuana or any other drug will be a disastrous decision that could permanently affect our society's mental and physical health and also doomed our national security. This would be the perfect excuse for social loners to go crazy and commit violent crimes.
Rigorous and unquestionable research shows how dangerous and harmful the plant is today, even much more than before, due to its genetic treatment. It affects the functions of intelligence, cognitive, understand attention, memory and concentration, in young adolescents, especially, because when you start smoking at a very young age, a stage where the brain is forming, the damage is irreversible.
In the other hand ,Hard drugs are drugs that lead to physical addiction. Many countries do not allow people to make, sell or use some of them, other than for medical purposes. like cocaine or ectasy.
If we allow these substances as legal, we would be promoting irresponsible consumption and future acts of violence.
